Picton, Ontario – Residents of Prince Edward County who do not have a primary care provider now have somewhere to turn when they have an urgent health care need.

The Prince Edward Family Health Team (PEFHT) is pleased to announce the launch of the much-anticipated Community Clinic, scheduled to start caring for patients on February 27, 2024

This clinic is a PEFHT program designed to provide problem-specific primary care to unattached residents of Prince Edward County and builds on the success of existing unattached programs and the COVID, Cold and Flu Care Clinics that were operational this past year and the year before.

In Prince Edward County, as of October 2023, 2000 residents were registered on Health Care Connect, a provincial waiting list for a family physician, but the unattached situation locally is much more dire than this.

Symptoms and conditions that can be assessed and treated at the clinic include, but are not limited to sore ears, sore throat, cough, UTI, bladder infections, sprains and strains, minor burns, eye redness and irritation, skin infections, rashes, wound checks and minor sutures, congestive heart failure, asthma, STD screening, prenatal care (initial ultrasound requisition and referral to OBGYN), mental health, prescription renewals, drivers’ physicals, clearances for participation in activities, return to work letters, post-assessment specialist referrals.

The clinic will be available 9:00am to 3:30pm on Tuesdays in Picton at 35 Bridge St. Suite 1 and 2 and Thursdays in Wellington at the Sandbanks Medical Centre located at 12 Prince Edward St. Phone lines will open on Mondays from 1pm to 4pm and then on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 4:00pm. Residents will be able to call 613-827-8775 to book an appointment or *book online by visiting www.pefht.ca

PEFHT is inviting residents to a series of community information sessions and open houses to learn more about this clinic and other PEFHT programs and services. Light refreshments to be provided.

QUOTES

“We are excited to be in a position to launch this community clinic to care for our neighbours who are without a primary care provider. The unattachment situation in the County continues to worsen and we recognize that our local health care system needs to respond. For us, these efforts are intended to ensure that our friends, loved ones and neighbours have the best possible health throughout life.”

- Dr. Sarah Le Blanc, Family Physician and PEFHT Board President.

PEFHT cares deeply about the community and the launch of this clinic is a testament to that and to be able to do this with no additional funding is quite remarkable. The team here at our community’s family health team, yet again has risen to the challenge and sees this clinic as an opportunity to be of even greater service. We remain very hopeful that provincial funding will follow so that we can connect even more patients to primary care.” – Barinder Gill, PEFHT Executive Director.
